Suburban Voice

SPITZZ-Touché Pussycats (Tario, CD)
For all the heavy rep Boston has as a garage rock-friendly town, there have only been a few bands that really live up to it and the Spitzz have emerged as one of those bands. They follow the simple is better method, drawing on various punk, rock and garage influences, unafraid to borrow on occasion—such as the “Nervous Breakdown” cop for “Channel One.” “Touché Pussycat” is the band’s second album and continues the level of quality from their debut, “Sick Savage and Sensual.” Confident and fired-up. If Gluecifer were younger, faster, and from Boston, they'd be Spitzz, and that's a-o-fucking-kay with me. And if there aren't some Gun Club, Cramps, and Flesheaters albums among the band member's record collections, I'll eat my Hellacopters decals. That's the end of the name-dropping, I swear. This is the goods. Yes, the phrase "punk rock" appears in the liner notes, but those words will inevitably carry some preconceptions that will be confounded by this disc, so forget you saw 'em. It's just Rock, capital R and all. There's a little twang here, a little psychobilly reverb there, hot riffs galore, a truly live-sounding recording that sounds garage-y NOT because they wanted it to have that hip garage-y sound, but because that's really how it fucking sounds with snotty vocals worthy of The Decline and Fall of East Coast Civilization, and actual guitar solos, for which I have always been a sucker. And the whole shooting match clocks in at under 23 minutes, so there sure as hell isn't any filler here. If I ever throw a big block party where people get drunk and set shit on fire, Spitzz will get the gig. (Tim Emswiler)

The Spitzz
7"s

Tario Records PO Box 501 / Cambridge, MA 02238-0581

The Spitzz so far have two 7”s, and are not to be confused with “The Spits,” who are from Washington state I believe. These guys are from Massachussetts, and are comprised of most of the people from Showcase Showdown. Whereas Showcase had a definite British influence, these guys sound more American. Take Me to the Hospital actually really reminds me of the Dead Kennedys a lot, and Get Kicked puts me in the mind of US Bombs a little. In my opinion, though, the 7” with the dog wearing a gas mask ranks superior with some vital, unpolished punk rock that will make you thirsty for some PBR. - BL
